About the Item

József Csáky (Szeged, March 18, 1888 – Paris, May 1, 1971) was a Hungarian sculptor renowned for his pioneering contributions to Cubism. He began his studies at the School of Applied Arts in Budapest under the mentorship of Lajos György Mátrai and his son, Lajos Mátrai. In 1908, Csáky relocated to Paris, joining the Artistes Indépendants circle. He was among the first sculptors to embrace Cubism, translating its geometric and abstract forms into his work. His sculptures combined analytical Cubism with decorative elegance, creating a unique and innovative style. Csáky's art evolved throughout his career, but he consistently retained his cubist influences. A major retrospective of his work was held in Budapest in 1959. Csáky's legacy endures, celebrated for its originality and its impact on modern sculpture.
