About the Item

St. Philip Neri (Florence, 1515 - Rome, 1595) moved to Rome at a very young age and would remain there for the rest of his life. He took courses in theology and philosophy at La Sapienza University. The saint is known as the inventor of the Secular Oratory, a true gymnasium of charity and holiness, a place of gathering and sharing, not only for young people, but also for the poor and the sick. In 1548, he founded the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity, which was particularly dedicated to assisting the poorest pilgrims, prisoners, and the sick in hospitals and lazarettos. Because of his virtues and ability to heal bodies and souls, he was loved, admired, and revered by popes, prelates, and cardinals. The saint is depicted in the act of preaching.
