About the Item

Excellent Piece of Viennese Bronze Art: Elaborately detailed bronze sculpture of a slave trader with a girl under palm trees: Old oriental man in a long coat and turban in a stooped posture holding a lantern high with one hand, grasping the wrist of a pretty young woman with the other, trying to cover herself with her free hand and looking shyly to the side at a basket full of snakes which, hinged open, offers the possibility of a hiding place. Based on an irregular meadow base, all parts cold-painted in color. Excellent and detailed quality of execution, very lifelike representation, as is typical for Viennese bronze art. Manufactured ca. 1910 by Vienna Bronze Manufactory Bergmann Bronze modeling, casting, patinated and cold painted Dimensions: height: 37,5 cm / 14.76 inches width: 26,0 cm / 10.23 inches depth: 17,0 cm / 6.69 inches weight: 3.000 grams / 105.60 oz / 96.46 troy oz Condition: excellent Viennese Bronze Manufactory Bergmann: Franz Xaver Bergmann (also: Bergman / 1861–1936) was the owner of the Viennese foundry, which produced numerous patinated and cold-painted oriental, erotic and animal bronze figures, some with human features, as well as bizarre and humorous works of art. Known for his detailed and colorful work and the signature either a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartridge or 'Nam Greb' - 'Bergman' in reverse order. These characters were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father Franz Bergmann was a professional hunter from Gablonz / Bohemia, who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his father's workshop.
