About the Item

A Large Terracotta Statue of Discobolus, 19th Century A Terracotta statue of the classical Greek 'Discobolus" by Myron. This particular figure is modelled after the 2nd century Roman marble copy the "Townley Discobolus', unearthed at Hadrian's Villa in 1791. The figure's body is twisted as if ready to fling the discus raised in his right hand, his left hand hanging over his right knee, the right foot forward and placed flatly on the ground whilst the left leg is bent behind with the left foot raised on its toes. Adhering to the Townley discobolus, which was incorrectly restored, the figure's head is positioned forward with eyes to the ground, as opposed to Myron's original which gazes back towards the discus. Raised on a moulded base. Height: 242 cm (plus base) 80 cm Width: 105 cm (plus base) 70 cm Depth: 45 cm (plus base) 65 cm Provenance: Private Italian Collection.
