About the Item

This work cast in the last quarter of the 19th century is a type of souvenir made as a reminder of the grand tour taken by many Europeans as a final educational trip bringing the person into adult life and the world stage. Education, language, history, literature, painting, music and a certain polish were the purpose and buying things that spoke of these adventures to bring home showed others you had arrived. This statue a popular grand tour object was cast by several of the best foundries in Naples in numerous sizes and finishes. The original statue discovered in Pompeii is from one of the richest homes excavated. The figure originally was set on the lip of the impluvium or catch basin for rain water of the house but has sense been moved to the center of the pond. The house of the Faun named so because of this statue is one of Pompeii’s most visited homes. The statues this among the most famous and its mosaics make it a symbol of ancient Italy’s wealth, history and refinement. This casting comes from about the last two decades in the 19th century. The finish is not verdi antique but in what was once a rich brown. This has now mellowed over time to a warm old golden color with some areas of darker patina making it quite pleasing to look at and admire for its fluid grace. This casting is of middle size not to small and not of actual size making its placement within a home difficult.
