Nicola Fumo (Saragnano, Salerno, 1647 -, 1725?) "Assumption of the Virgin" Spain, 17th century. Carved and polychromed wood Measures: 100 x 40 x 40 cms. Nicola Fumo was an Italian Baroque architect and sculptor, considered one of the foremost exponents of the neapolitan imagery. He was born in Saragnano, Salerno, within a family of carvers, so that the wood statuary was very introduced in Nicola Fumo's infancy. According to De Dominici, he worked as a pupil in Cosimo Fanzago's studio. In addition there is evidence of its close relationship with Gaetano Patalano. In Italy he received several commissions, highlighting the "Assumption of the Virgin" for the main altar of the Cathedral of Lecce in Apulia, dated 1689. Although he received orders in Italy along throughout his career, especially Neapolitans, it is in Madrid where Nicola Fumo reaches its maximum success. Among his most famous works is the "Fall of Christ road to Calvary" in the Church of San Ginés of Madrid, signed and dated in 1698, and a year later donated to the church by the Marquis of Mejorada. Because of its enormous technical quality, we have to mention the magnificent "Immaculate" by Nicola Fumo which is preserved in the Museo Conventual de Antequera, Malaga. It's possible to see a clear similarity in technique and composition, between this piece from Antequera an the one presented here. In conclusion, we are proud of presenting we an impressive example of the magnificent sculptures that Nicola Fumo made in Spain, which he showed clearly his virtuosity as carver. A technical ability that undoubtedly reaches its maximum Baroque delirium in the numerous naked cherubs at the bottom. In short, it's a piece that clearly reflects the lightness, the wide dynamism, the gentleness in the faces and the subtlety in each hair tendril that characterized the skill of this extraordinary Neapolitan master.
