Marta Minujín is a multi-disciplinary artist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After finishing her studies at the Escuela de Bellas Artes Manuel Belgrano and the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes in 1963, she went to Paris on a fellowship to study painting, afterwards splitting her time between New York and Buenos Aires. Minujín was a pioneer in the pop art scene in Buenos Aires. She deconstructs art only to reconstruct it again, examining the mythology and symbols of both contemporary and ancient cultures. Her work utilizes the medium as the message, in order to make work not only about a static object, but about the audience’s relationship to the concepts and history surrounding it. Minujín’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach; the Museo of Arte Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires; and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires.
In this plaster sculpture Marta Minujín deconstructs a reproduction of a classical Greek bust to question the historical and cultural legacies that have dominated our views on Western civilization. By shrinking down and separating this iconic object into various strata, she asks us to question the mythologies that surround these symbols, and in a way, makes it more accessible by altering the size and materials of the object she is referencing. Minujín’s body of work, which incorporates performance, installation, and sculpture, often transforms academic monumental forms by infusing or combining them with pop art or popular elements. The results are an interrogation of structures of dominance and a search for the democratization of art, history, and culture.
