Franz Bergman Sculptures
Bergman Man in Tent – Bergman is celebrated for his great attention to detail and wonderful vibrant colours, Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936) is, arguably, the most famous of the Viennese cold-painted bronze artists, delighting in producing Oriental, Arab bronze and animal subjects, including Harem beauties, Arab tradesmen, Scribes and Arab Warrior and almost every animal subject that was known at the time.
His father, also Franz Bergman (1838–1894), was a professional chaser (embosser) from Gablonz, Austria who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. Franz Xavier inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. There he created numerous cold painted (so named because the numerous layers of polychrome paint, applied to the bronze, were not fired to fix them to the metal) figures. Many other bronzes were still based on designs by Franz Bergman, the elder.
Orientalist Subjects
From the 17th Century onwards it was customary for the young Victorian gentleman to go on the obligatory tour of the East – the Grand Tour – as an educational rite of passage. Visiting countries and experiencing customs they had only ever heard about in stories, these young men were keen to show their families mementos of their experience, especially the lavish subjects of the Middle Eastern Arab world. The return trip would usually include a visit to Vienna, and here the ‘souvenir’ shops supplied a plethora of beautifully crafted sculptures with an Orientalist Arab flavour. These were often acquired to show their friends and families images of their travels. An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work.
ARTIST
Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia.

Friedrich Richard Roland Paris (March 18, 1894 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary - May 4, 1945 in Swinemünde, Germany) was a German caricaturist, writer of satirical verse, graphic designer, painter and Art Deco sculptor.
Roland Paris attended the Grand-Ducal Realgymnasium in Weimar from 1905. From 1909, he was a student at the Saxon Grand-Ducal School of Applied Arts in Weimar. Here, in 1912, he received second and third prizes as well as 25 points in a competition for the design of emblems for student associations, which he continued to produce for two or three years. Some of these works showed the influence of Art Nouveau, others included more modern approaches. In 1912, Paris took a course in sculpture at the Saxon Grand-Ducal School of Art in Weimar with the sculptor Gottlieb Elster. He then went to Munich, where he completed internships with several sculptors. In 1913, he returned to the school of Fine arts in Weimar and studied painting with Walther Klemm.
In June 1915 he received his call up order for the Eastern Front of World War I and served first in a commando unit and then in the Air Force Inspectorate (IdFlieg) . After his return in 1919, he settled in Berlin. In 1924 he married Elisabeth Lisl Austen (b. 1897), a dancer at the Théâtre des Westens who modeled most of his female characters; he depicted himself for the facial parts of his male characters. The marriage remained childless. Their shared one-bedroom apartment in the backyard of Xantener Strasse 11 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf was also the Paris Studio, where he designed and made many of his sculptures, as well as graphics and paintings...
