Mezcala Stone Palanquin Group - Circa 300-100 BC with 1971 Provenance

RARE MEZCALA STONE PALANQUIN GROUP An exceptionally rare Mezcala stone Palanquin Group depicting a four-legged litter with tapering posts, arched arm rests, openwork guilloche designs on three sides, the backrest carved with a schematic, seated dignitary with legs outstretched, hands clasped at the torso, the wide triangular-shaped head with sunken facial features, the front posts surmounted by diminutive seated Mezcala M22 attendants Mezcala Culture, Guerrero West Mexico, Ca. 300 - 100 B.C. There are numerous Mezcala stone figures and temple models available, but there is only one other Palanquin known, which was sold at Christies, Paris on 9 Nov., 2021, Lot 58 Above in the Additional photos section is the page from Christies catalog, displaying this Palanquin. The two sculpture are almost identical in every detail. The only difference is that the Christies example is somewhat larger. There can be no question but that these were made by the same sculptor at the same time, or at the very least, in the same workshop. How they became separated remains a mystery. The offered example was purchased on May 10, 1971 from the renowned L.A. Collector/Dealer Jules Berman(The founder of Kahlua LIqueurs), and was held in this private collection for 50 years until 2021.(The original Bill of Sale is available) The Christies Palanquin was estimated at 30 - 50,000 Euros, and sold for 93,750 Euros ($102,000).
