About the Item

Monumental Curtis Jere Brass Sailboat Sculpture, Signed and Dated 1976 Dimensions: 52″ W × 39″ H × 7″ D Signed: © C. Jere, 1976 A striking and monumental brass wire sculpture of a schooner sailboat, designed and executed by Curtis Jere (the design studio founded by Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels under Artisan House). Dated 1976, this masterful work exemplifies Jere’s celebrated ability to fuse sculptural abstraction with decorative modern design. Constructed in brass rod with brazed and soldered joints, the piece outlines the hull, rigging, and sails in a linear and architectural fashion. Rather than producing a literal ship model, Jere distills the essence of a vessel under sail into an airy, geometric lattice that captures both form and movement. The result is a play of light, shadow, and volume, giving the impression of sails filled with wind and a vessel poised for motion. At over four feet wide, this sculpture commands presence as both a decorative object and a work of art. Its open framework allows it to complement interiors of varying styles—from coastal modern and Palm Springs Regency to loft and contemporary minimalist spaces. Such monumental, signed examples are increasingly rare, as many of Jere’s works from this period were produced in smaller sizes or unsigned for retail distribution. In excellent condition with only minor age wear consistent with its date, this piece remains a testament to the bold decorative art of the 1970s, when Jere’s studio works were prominently installed in design-forward residences and corporate lobbies alike.
