About the Item

Napoleone Martinuzzi for Venini red Cactus Succulent sculpture, Signed, 1929. Exceedingly rare example of a signed Venini succulent by Matinuzzi. Museum-worthy masterwork by Martinuzzi during his groundbreaking tenure as artistic director of Venini. Large-scale. Original brass frame. This stunning pulegoso glass and gold leaf “pianta grassa” is in very good antique condition with no apparent signs of repair. Acid etched Venini signature is at bottom. Lovely contrasting white glass rim on pot. Playful use of co lot with the green pot and red cactus. Interesting to see this “pop” use of color in figurative sculpture at this early date (1920’s). The signature is important in terms of dating the piece as an extremely early, ‘Venini era’ succulent. Martinuzzi’s first succulent sculptures date to 1929 and he left Venini in 1931. Therefore, this piece has to have been made in late 1929 or 1930. The vast majority of Mattinuzzi succulents were sculpted after his tenure at Venini and are either unsigned (1931-1950s) or signed ‘Martinuzzi’ (1960s-1970s). Literature: Model 2469 in Venini catalogue as seen in Napoleone Martinuzzi Venini 1925-1931 by Marino Barovier, page 275.

Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery Coral Flamingo Centerpiece Planter Set 1929
By Waylande Gregory, Cowan Pottery
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Waylande Gregory Coral Flamingo Centerpiece and Planter, Cowan Pottery, Ohio, USA, 1928-1931. Marked "COWAN" under flamingo. Waylande Desantis Gregory (1905 Baxter Springs, Kansas – 1971, New Jersey) was one of the most innovative and prolific American art-deco ceramics sculptors of the early 20th century. His groundbreaking techniques enabled him to create monumental ceramic sculpture, such as the Fountain of the Atoms and Light Dispelling Darkness, which had hitherto not been possible. He also developed revolutionary glazing and processing methods, and was a seminal figure in the studio glass movement. The Cowan Pottery Studio was founded by R. Guy Cowan in Lakewood, Ohio, United States in 1912. It moved to Rocky River, Ohio in 1920, and operated until 1931, when the financial stress of the Great Depression resulted in its bankruptcy. Cowan Pottery produced both artistic and commercial work in a variety of styles influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Deco, Chinese ceramics, and modern sculpture. During its two decades of operation, a number of well-known Cleveland School artists worked with Cowan at the studio: Elizabeth Anderson, Arthur Eugene Baggs, Alexander Blazys, Paul Bogatay, Edris Eckhardt, Waylande Gregory, A. Drexler Jacobson, among many others. With the exception of Guy Cowan, himself, Waylande Gregory designed more pieces for the pottery than anyone else. Gregory joined R. Guy Cowan in Rocky River, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, in 1928, where he became the leading sculptor of the Cowan Pottery studio. Unlike his contemporaries at Cowan Pottery, who were primarily influenced by Viennese modern...

Marbro Oxblood Elephant-handled Chinese Urn Table Lamp Sangre de Boeuf Regency
By The Marbro Lamp Company
Located in Brooklyn, NY
The Marbro company was founded by Morris Markoff and his brother, hence the name "Marbro" from Markoff brothers. They started the company shortly after WWII. The company was located in a 3 story brick building in the garment district of Los Angeles, just south of Downtown right by the Santa Monica Freeway. During the time they ran the company, they sold almost as many antiques as they did lamps. Marbro sold their products mainly through interior designers and a few upscale furniture stores. Most of the products were built to order. A typical order from a designer or retailer took between 75 and 90 days to complete. Most of the components that made up the lamp bodies (ceramic, brass, glass, etc) were purchased from small companies and antique dealers around the world. For the most part, none of the bodies were made on site. . Italy was the source for alabaster, Japan and China for Porcelain, Brass in India and Crystal from Germany and France. Lamps would also be made from sculptures that customers brought to in to the shop. Once the lamp bodies arrived, a group of Marbro employees would make the wood bases, spin the metal caps, make the shades, and do the painting and tinting. With the help of about 20-40 other true world class artisans, metal workers, finishers and handmade shade makers, they produced lamps and shades that were truly some of last of their kind of art. Here we have an astonishing example of Marbro production. This mid to late 18th century lusciously oxblood lacquered "sang de boeuf" Chinese urn was almost certainly a custom commission by a client, the owner of the Qing urn. The exceptional quality of the urn, it's size, gentle proportions, the even application of the oxblood glaze (especially over the stunning elephant handles) are of a quality that I have not seen before in a lamp. The Marbro artisans truly did right by their client, as they allowed the exceptional form and color of the Chinese antique take center stage. The simple base follows the proportion of the body yet perfectly echoes the angle and curve of the elephant trunk handles. Victorian lampshade...
