Nives Child Figure in Bronze by Italian Sculptor Pellini Eugenio 1900

About the Item

Eugenio Pellini Nives Early 1900 bronze casting with dark patina signed by Italian Lombard author E. Pellini (1864-1934) on the left side of the rectangular base; on the front edge, also in block letters, we find engraved the title, Nives, name of the first-born daughter. In excellent condition, the sculpture dates back to the early 20th century and is from a private collection in Milan. Resting on a square base with a slight object holder recess in the front, as if it were a paperweight sculpture, the child dressed in a smock and a cap is portrayed intent on looking at a soft object, perhaps a doll, holding in his hands. Eugenio Pellini was born on November 17, 1864, in Marchirolo, at that time in the province of Como (now Varese) to Andrea and Carolina Pellini. In 1878 he moved to Milan to his brother Oreste and began his apprenticeship in the workshop of the marble worker Biganzoli. In 1888 he began attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and produced his first significant works, most notably "The Chimney Sweep." On November 10, 1891, he won the Oggioni Triennial Prize, which included specialization at the Rome Academy. Eugenio thus begins a long art journey through Italy, on a journey that will take him to Florence, Rome and Sicily. Later, in Paris he encountered the sculpture of Medardo Rosso and Rodin, authors who were to prove fundamental to the evolution of his style. He returned to Milan in 1893 and made some monumental sculptures such as "The Angel of Grief" for the Macario tomb and "Christ in Gethsemane" for the Lardera tomb. His artistic consecration was completed in 1897 when he won the Tantardini Prize, in which he proposed the work "Mother"; with that sculptural group he was called to represent Lombard sculpture at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, where he received other prizes. Because of the unrest affecting Milan, the sculptor took refuge in Varese. In the early 1900s he returned to Milan and obtained a teaching position at the Scuola Superiore degli Artefici del Castello Sforzesco, an activity he retained until 1929. In 1903, the meeting with his future wife, Dina Magnani, a model at the Brera Academy, by whom he would have three children: Nives, Eros (future sculptor) and Silvana. He participated in all the Venice Biennales, starting in 1905; he was present at the Roman Secession, the Brera Triennale, and numerous exhibitions abroad. In the meantime, the serious illness that had already struck him during the World War flared up again around 1925; despite pressing work commitments, he had to give up his work as an artist and teacher. On May 28, 1934, he passed away in Milan, in the house on Via Curtatone (now Via Siracusa); he is buried in the Marchirolo cemetery. Height: 16.5 cm Width: 9.5 cm Depth: 13.5 cm
