1952 Brass Eagle Bookends by Virginia Metalcrafters
Located in San Diego, CA
Beautiful pair of brass spread-wing eagle bookends by Virginia Metalcrafters, stamped 1952. The eagle is shown with its wings fully spread and a laurel branch and bundle of arrows clutched in its left talon. The eagle clutches a Union shield across its breast. The Union shield has a chief with three stars and six stripes completing the design. The eagle motif in décor and Folk Art has been widely used throughout our nation's history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows and an olive branch with its talons. When Charles Thomson put together the final design for the Great Seal, he placed a bundle of arrows in the eagle's left (sinister) talon. The official description specifies the bald eagle holding "in his sinister a bundle of thirteen arrows." The thirteen arrows are tightly aligned – a symbol of "strength in unity" that's found in the traditional cultures everywhere, from the Romans to the Iroquois— in this case a nod to the unity of the original 13 colonies. William J. Loth founded Virginia Metalcrafters in 1890, under the name Waynesboro Stove Company. The company, which made ornately cast Cook...

Unique Pair of Contemporary Art Painted Fiberglass Boy Sculptures Signed
Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a unique pair of contemporary art painted fiberglass boy sculptures signed… by the artist … we think “Laqi”. These sculptures are a pair of the ‘cutest’ pieces of contemporary sculpture that we have seen for a while. We really wish we could identify and learn more about the artist, but what we do know is that these belonged to a former artist and art and collectibles dealer in New Orleans. She treasured these and they came with her to Dallas. She was very active in the New Orleans art scene in the early 1990s. The sculptures appear to also have a practical function as planters. One features a boy’s denim jeans and waistcoat in a standing position and the other a boy’s denim overalls in a seated position. Both are made of fiberglass which has been painted and textured. Exceptional detail to the outfit. Right down to the buttons and clasps and the sneakers and shoelaces. Mottled green and black in color. We cannot find anything quite like these anywhere!! Specific provenance: These sculptures were acquired by Ms. Naomi Baggett in or circa 1990-1999. Originally from North Carolina, an Air Force Veteran and JAG Advocate, Ms. Baggett after her service moved to New Orleans and worked as a paralegal until setting up and operating an Art & Curiosities Store in the famous New Orleans Hotel Montleone between 1990 and 1995. Her store was called ‘Baggetelle’. It was featured in various industry magazines and hotel documentation. The store specialized in selling miniature French Quarter Houses which were used as jewelry boxes. Ms. Baggett was an artist herself and handmade and hand painted these houses along with a partner. She received orders for these miniature houses...

"Triton, Merman and Mermaid, " Sculptural Vase w/ Aquatic Motif and Nudes in Blue
By Edgardo Simone
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts. He sculpted the likenesses of Thomas Edison, John Pershing, Henry Ford, Louis Brandeis, Sally Rand, President Franklin Roosevelt...

Scott Gordon, Altar II, 2021
By Scott Gordon
Located in Sharon, VT
Altar II welded steel Measures: 5 x 18.5 x 23 in. Artist statement: I seldom use stock material, but prefer distressed and rusted steel that has been scarred, bent, and made imperfect. In this state, the material becomes quite beautiful. There are figurative elements in my work, though I am more drawn to the non-figurative, to the raw and essential aspect of steel. The Industrial purpose of steel must be considered, its use in construction, manufacturing, the military. Steel is forged with enormous energy and power. The process is violent, loud. Here, it is still and approachable. The compositions are constructed mainly from found parts. Their relationships manifest as I interact with the material. The pieces interlock, balance, and become fitted before I fasten or weld them together. The engineering is elemental. Altering the material is avoided. The number of parts kept to a minimum. Art is my spiritual exercise, my selflessness. It identifies me as a creator and satisfies my human longing for place and purpose. It needs not to be great, or preeminent, or commercial. Art speaks because it is Primitive. It exists because it is sacred. Biography: Scott Gordon was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1966. He attended the University of Denver where he studied business and the University of Washington where he pursued an MFA in creative writing. While he was in Seattle, he was introduced to steel as an employee of the David Gulassa...
