Rare Art Deco Bronze Sculpture “Mischievous” by Paul Philippe
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PAUL PHILIPPE Polish/French, 1870-1930 "Mischievous" Polychromed gilt bronze over original marble base signed in cast "P. PHILIPPE" signed in cast "i9.R / France" with foundry seal of A.G. Paris Item # 212MPH15S An exquisite and rare example of Paul Philippe's Mischievous finished in a brilliant polychromed gilt, the young woman grabs her reddish-brown hair in hand while looking off into the corner with a sly look in her eyes that suggests she holds a secret that we will never know. The base signature is captured directly from the mold. Situated over its original faceted base. A very fine work. ARTIST Born in Thorn in Poland in 1870, Paul Philippe studied under Antonin Larroux at the École des Beaux-Arts after moving to Paris, France around 1900. He exhibited extensively at all of the major French salons and developed his own voice in sculpture by focusing his ouevre around the movement of the female body, often depicting exotic models in highly theatrical poses with a loose adherence to realism in his idealized visions. He walked a fine line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco while his figures do tend towards the latter. He executed figures in bronze and chryselephantine and worked with some of the best foundries in France and Germany. Many examples of his work are held in the Art Deco Museum in Moscow, Russia. Set of 3 Metal CACTUS Contemporary BRUTALIST SCULPTURES by ESOJ France 2020
By (Circle of) Jan Weesop
Located in PARIS, FR
A set of 3 strong and spectacular metal cactus, contemporary brutalist sculptures, unique pieces by artist ESOJ, France 2020. Dimensions : The higher : H 101.5 x D 23 cm / H 40 x D 9 inch The medium : H 50 x D 17 cm / H 20 x 6.7 inch The smaller : H 21 x D 16,5 cm / H 8.2 x 6.5 inch These pieces allow to be presented independently, as well as together (recommended) allowing various esthetic compositions. They are made to be set up indoor as radical sculptures, as well as outdoor on a terrasse or in any garden or even wild nature to create a trouble illusion between wildness and modernity. We represent ESOJ and organized his exhibition "Metal Spirit", November 2022, in our gallery in Paris, and this unique piece was presented during this event. Esoj's work is rooted in a direct link to daily life, to the visual value of consumer objects. Whether they are elements of nature or products of pop culture, he fixes them in the metal to give them a definitive appearance, a form of immortality: a box of opened chocolates will be there forever, nothing will not erase Mickey's sluggish smile, nor his middle finger; a succulent plant frozen in iron will no longer need water... A parallel world under construction, a world of avatars springing from a metallic quintessence which confronts man with himself, with matter, with progress, to the flow of time. Beyond their symbolic force, Esoj's sculptures express as much the visceral gesture of the artist in a world losing meaning, as they catalog his universe in a subjective archive. For his first collaboration with us, Esoj looks away from his Barbie dolls, Playmobils and bags of M&Ms, to sketch a sort of return to Nature and vibrate an ancestral wisdom evident in his new series of cacti, succulents, vases and masks murals with shamanic connotations. A wisdom that he draws from his Portuguese origins, this saudade: “tension between opposites, on the one hand the feeling of a lack, on the other hand the hope and the desire to find what we lack”, embodied here by a particularly inhabited desert; where cacti are next to agaves, aloes, prickly pears, plants which are certainly ornamental but also hallucinogenic and healing, sometimes fatal; where the series of containers suggests an almost medicinal link between these inert objects, even more obvious in the wall piece inspired by Korean...

French Terracotta Sculpture Nude Woman "Premiere Faute" - by LAMI - Art Nouveau
By Stanislas Lami
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Female nude in terracotta. Signed "St. Lami" on the base. Stanislas Lami is a French sculptor. Stamp mark "Terracotta - R. D'ARLY Paris". This work inspires purity and delicacy. The sculpture represents a kneeling naked woman, the features are fine and pleasant. The work is neat and delicate. The position of the woman calls for calm and tranquility. Our terracotta proof is a reduction of Stanislas Lami's marble entitled "Première Faute" which earned him the second medal at the Salon of 1891. The work represents a young woman kneeling, her arms modestly covering her face with closed eyes. At the dawn of the 20th century, this elegant statuette was part of the symbolist movement and announced the Art Nouveau movement. This beautiful work was included in the second edition of the artist's catalog raisonné. Related literature: Grégoire de Thoury, Stanislas Lami (1858-1944), catalog raisonné of sculptures, Paris, 2014, model listed under number FA12. More widely known for his masterful literary work, Stanilas Lami is an artist as much as a scholarly amateur. Son of the sculptor Alphonse Lami, grandson of the neoclassical painter Bidauld, son-in-law of the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer, he benefited all his life from an environment favorable to the promotion and commissioning of his written or sculpted works. While he wrote his famous dictionaries of sculptors of the French School throughout his career, over around forty years, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes français between 1882 and 1942. Wonderful decorative piece. Beautiful dimensions. France - Art Nouveau - 1891 Stanislas Lami, born in 1858 in Paris and died in 1944, was a French sculptor and art historian. He is the grandson of landscape painter François-Xavier Bidault and the son of sculptor Alphonse Lami. Some of his works are kept in museums, especially in Spain. In Paris, at the Musée d'Orsay, there is a marble sculpture of the Danish Dog...

Large bronze after Pigalle, "Mercure attachant ses talonnières", 19th century
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Paris, FR
Brown patina bronze sculpture depicting Mercury (Hermes), god of commerce, thieves and messenger of the gods, seated on a rock tying his winged heel-piece. He is wearing a petasus, a winged hat, and his caduceus is resting on the ground. This sculpture, based on a model by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, shows a young god, naked and in motion. In a double-swivel position, he prepares to take off. The bronze, resting on a circular stepped base in griotte red marble, is signed on the terrace "Pigalle, 1745". The original of this sculpture was Pigalle's reception piece for the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture on July 30, 1744, which entered the Louvre between 1848 and 1850. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle: The sculptor of the Enlightenment A great French sculptor, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle was born in Paris in 1714. He worked on his art from an early age under the guidance of Robert Le Lorrain and later Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. Convinced that his art was the meaning of his life, he returned to Italy in 1734 to perfect his technique. On his return, he began his "Mercure attachant sa talonnière" (1740), which enabled him to enter the Beaux-Arts. His reputation soared among the Parisian aristocracy. Mme de Pompadour took him under her wing, and commissions poured in. Juggling between the Baroque and the Classical, he painted portraits of Diderot and Voltaire, then created the famous funeral monuments...
