Count Bruhl's Tailor, 19th C. Bisque Porcelain Goat And Rider By Vion Et Baury
Located in Free Union, VA
A very finely modeled French bisque porcelain figural group, incorporating a mix of glazed and natural bisque porcelain. Dating to the late 19th century, this is an excellent example of the work produced by modeler Charles Baury who worked in Paris for the firm of Jean Giles (founded in 1837) until Baury took over the manufactory in 1868 and a few years later moved it to Choisey-le-Roi. A periwinkle embossed maker’s seal cipher “VB” for Vion et Baury is found on the underside. The figures and costume are inspired by the whimsy, beauty and absurdity frequently found in earlier 18th and 19th century Meissen porcelain compositions, and the historical figure, Heinrich, Count von Brühl...

Palatial French 19th-20th Century Allegorical Figural Cast Iron Group Torchere
By Val D'Osne Foundry
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine and palatial French 19th-20th century allegorical figural cast-iron group torchere - sculpture - fountain - representing spring and the harvest, probably cast by Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne. The charming four-putti sculpture with a front standing putto holding a pole amongst wheat stalks, another putto kneeling and collecting wheat, a third one wearing a hat and picking flowers for a wreath and the fourth kneeling putto holding a bird's nest, all below an elongated classical stem with a glass globe (Electrified), circa: Paris, 1900. Overall height: 84 inches (213.4 cm). Width: 29 1/2 inches (74.9 cm). Circular base diameter: 24 inches (61 inches). Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought-iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...

Edmé Samson Porcelain Figure of Piper, Rococo Chelsea style, 19th Century
By Chelsea Porcelain
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful figure of a piper made by Edmé Samson in Paris some time in the 19th Century. The figure is in the style of Chelsea and marked with the Chelsea gold anchor mark. Edmé Samson was founded in Paris in 1845 and specialised in making replacements for valuable items of the French gentry and museums. They became so good at this that they eventually grew out to be the "great imitators" - not necessarily to fool anyone, but more to fill in gaps in collections that had arisen through breakage and wear, and to offer the new French bourgeoisie an affordable way to obtain pieces of top quality. This is how they came to create many items in the style of Sèvres, Meissen, Bow, Chelsea and Derby. The good Samson pieces are now highly collectable in their own right as they rival the quality of the originals. This very charming piper is stood upon a Rococo scroll with flowers at his feet, the remains of a previous bocage behind his back. The bocage has most probably been broken off. Like many porcelain figures of the time, this boy is very finely dressed: colourful pantalons, a long pink coat...
