About the Item

A very fine French Sevres biscuit (Bisc) porcelain figure of a recumbent nude lady titled "Le Repos" after a model by Alfred Boucher (French, 1850-1934) Sensually depicting a young woman sleeping on her back on a Louis XVI style daybed, her arms above her head supported on a bolster, her knees bent and pelvis twisted to form a S-curve, the bed raised on fluted feet. Impressed with a triangular potting mark with the letter "S" and "1911" next to an ovoid impressed "Sevres" stamp and the letter "T," circa Paris, 1911. Alfred Boucher often had an erotic edge to his work, as exemplified by the present nude sculpture. He was employed as a sculptor at Sevres from 1892-1906 executing accurate portraits and academic monuments in porcelain, bronze and marble. His life-size nude of this subject, completed in 1892, was acquired by the Luxembourg Gardens and is currently in the Muse´e des Beaux Arts, Pau. A reduction in marble was sold Sotheby's London, 29 September 1999, lot 369. The model was edited in biscuit porcelain in two sizes. The present example is one of at least thirty-six made between 1900 and 1929. The model first came into production at the Sevres factory in 1896. (See E´mile Bourgeois and Geo. Lechavallier-Chevignard, Le Biscuit de Sevres, Recueil des Mode`les Modernes de La Manufacture de Se`vres , Tome II, plache 28, no. 1313). An identical biscuit sculpture is currently part of the collection at Muse´e Saint-Loup de Troyes, Exhibition of Porcelaines de la manufacture de Sevres. Measures: Height: 11 1/2 inches (29.2 cm). Width: 33 1/8 inches (84.1 cm). Depth: 13 inches (33 cm).
