Pair of 17th Century Angels

About the Item

Pair of angels in polychrome and gilded wood. They each carry a cornucopia receiving two iron arms of light decorated with flowers and foliage. Charming expression of these smiling angels. Very good state of preservation. Molded circular bases with the owner's inscription (Doña Soror Angela Cellini and the date MDCXIII: 1613) Spain early 17th century. The cerofer, also called flame holder, is in the Catholic liturgy an altar server who carries a torchiere, a candlestick or a simple candle lit outwards, that is to say directed towards the faithful. In general, it is two acolytes who carry the candle and participate in different Mass rituals, but their often even number and their hierarchical degree vary according to the solemnity of the ceremony and the liturgical customs of the parish.
