About the Item

Two tapestries (forming a pair) in wool and silk (Basse Lice). Manufacture Royale de Beauvais from the cartoons of Florentin Damoiselet (1644-1690). ‘La Bascule’ and ‘La Toupie’ (two copies of the famous series of seven tapestries from children’s games). 17th century period. Beautiful condition. Rare and rich border with musical instruments and games. Florentin Damoiselet, ordinary painter to the king, for whom he worked at the Château de Marly and Versailles, under the direction of Lebrun, after 1665 and before 1669. The models are attributed to Florentin Damoiselet (born in 1644) on the faith from an inventory of the factory dating from 1731 (Badin 1909, p. 21). The theme of the hanging destined it for use in the apartments of the royal children. From a cardboard identical to the tapestry woven in Beauvais with gold threads and delivered for King Louis XIV in 1669. The same year, a second tapestry was delivered to the Garde-Meuble but which did not include gold thread. gold. This tapestry has a different border and may have come from the collections of the Duchess of Maine, whose inventory after death (1753) mentions five pieces of Beauvais tapestry “à jeux d’enfants” valued at 800 pounds. The “La Toupie” tapestry is reproduced with the same border in the book Beauvais by Jean Coural and Chantal Gastinel-Coural at the Center National des Arts Plastiques page 12.
