About the Item

Made in France circa 1840s this finely cast pair of sphinxes are represented in the recumbent position most associated with the form. Showing on both figures are two hieroglyphic cartouches gilded as are the headdress and the ends of their wrapped tails and beards. The overall body in bronze is patinated and rests upon large blocks of carved porphyry. This then is set into bronze patinated and gilded bases. The bases are shown with large bands of gilt acanthus leaves running around all four sides. The stone is a rich purple color with very lovely mottled white speckling associated with fine Swedish porphyry used during the early to mid 19th century. Ancient sources of the stone such as Egypt had darker and less variegated tones, while Russian material tends to run in the green family of colors. It has been a prized and special hard stone from antiquity and was a favorite of Roman emperors.

Pair of Louis XVI Gilt and Patinated Bronze Sphinx Chenets
Located in Kittery Point, ME
Each with a recumbent winged sphinx with scrolling foliate arabesques to their back, upon a bow-ended rectangular gadrooned plinth, the frieze with a panel applied with entrelacs, on fluted toupie feet. Several models of chenets with sphinx exist, dating from the 1780s. An example with winged sphinxes with headresses and with female mask centering the frieze, attributed to either Pierre Gouthière or Pierre-Philippe Thomire, exists in several versions in the Louvre, Versailles and the Cleveland Museum of Art (see H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.I, p.276, fig. 4.11.14.). This model is based on a drawing by the architect François-Joseph Bélanger in the Bibliothèque Nationale, illustrated op. cit., fig. 4.11.13. Another type of sphinx chenet...
