Pair Of Japanese Carved Hardwood Fishermen Candlesticks Or Joss Stick Holders
About the Item
An unusual pair of sculptural candle or joss stick holders- a pair of jolly grinning men holding up smiling fish and standing on stylized rockery bases carved of a piece with the rest. Each figure is carved in three dimensions. The backs, while fairly flat, are still fully carved with hats and robes detailed. Eyes and teeth are inserted bits of shell which stand out in striking contrast to the ebonized hardwood. Good condition with some age/shrinkage splits to the wood. One slightly taller than the other. Early 20th century.

- Count Bruhl's Tailor, 19th C. Bisque Porcelain Goat And Rider By Vion Et BauryLocated in Free Union, VAA very finely modeled French bisque porcelain figural group, incorporating a mix of glazed and natural bisque porcelain. Dating to the late 19th century, this is an excellent example of the work produced by modeler Charles Baury who worked in Paris for the firm of Jean Giles (founded in 1837) until Baury took over the manufactory in 1868 and a few years later moved it to Choisey-le-Roi. A periwinkle embossed maker’s seal cipher “VB” for Vion et Baury is found on the underside. The figures and costume are inspired by the whimsy, beauty and absurdity frequently found in earlier 18th and 19th century Meissen porcelain compositions, and the historical figure, Heinrich, Count von Brühl...Category
