Pair Of Portuguese Rococo Carved Side Chairs

About the Item

A near pair of very elegant carved walnut Portuguese chairs with parcel gilding, almost certainly from a larger set of dining chairs. Within the English inspired format of ball and claw footed chairs, the carved Rococo elements have greater flare and are superb expressions of “rocaille,” asymmetrical cartouches derived from seashells and foliate forms. Hand caned seats are finely worked, old and in excellent condition. First half of the 18th century. Worming throughout, patina, substantial wear especially to the feet. Some restorations, chairs are sturdy and ready for use. One slightly taller (¼”) than the other. H: 42 W: 18 ¾ D: 18 Seat Heights vary by ¼” : 17 ½ and 17 ¾
