Continental Régence Inspired Commode With Rococo Carved Desk Top
About the Item
An exuberantly carved antique Northern European desk (probably Dutch) of unusual form: a serpentine block front case piece with three drawers and a slightly sloped fall front lid above, designed to be supported by the drawer below. The carving is extensive and boldly executed, with cartouche, shell and foliate forms. The timber is quarter sawn oak, which further adds to the decorative nature of the piece. The cabriole legs are also unusual, terminating in double paw feet. The interior of the desk is open and simple, consisting of a single serpentine curved shelf. Mid 19th century. Good antique condition, very sturdy, with normal signs of age, light wear, some worming, good waxed finish. Brass hardware is later.
