North Italian Carved And Painted Neoclassical Period Commode, 18th Century

About the Item

A fine two over three drawer Italian Neoclassical commode of oak, with refined low relief carved ornament of rinceaux, flower baskets, bell flower carved moldings and pearl rondels. Trompe l’oeil painted panels enliven the sides with painted medallions at the corners. The case rests on squared tapered and fluted feet. The polished bronze urn and ram’s head hardware are a very close variation on nearly identical hardware found on another commode sold by Christie’s, NY in 2019 said to be from Torino, Italy, and this commode likely also originated in that area. Painted surface refreshed, warm deep beige and turquoise, faux marble painted top. Good condition, some distress, typical signs of age to the wood. Missing one lock mechanism, but retains an original and rather fancy key.
