Italian White Marble Sculpture Bust Of A Girl As Ceres
About the Item
A marble sculpture of a girl inspired by antique classical sculptures of Ceres, the Roman goddess of wheat and fertility, her hair garlanded with wheat and with stems of ripe wheat intertwined in her braids, and with flowers on the sash of her robe. Signed underneath by the sculptor: Marchetta, ca. 1890’s - early 20th century. In two pieces, the bust lifts off the round marble plinth. Some shallow chipping, mainly to the underside of the base and a soft indentation to the nose, natural irregularities to the marble.
