About the Item
The two sculptures depict two horses tamed by two young men. The subject can be traced back to the iconography of the dioscuri, which originated in Greek, Roman, and Etruscan mythology and has evolved over time seeing countless repurpositions in marble, bronze, and other materials. One of the most common versions sees precisely the two dioscuri each flanked by a horse. One notable example is that of the Monte Cavallo Fountain in Rome's Quirinal Square.
Under one of the two sculptures is a mark that probably indicates the manufacture. They are supposed to be of Neapolitan manufacture.
