About the Item

Amazing pair of imposing West African Baga Nimba fertility shoulder mask sculptures or statues carved from teak. The headdresses depict busts of women on four legs stands decorated with traditional carved designs by the Baga people who inhabit the Guinea Atlantic coastline. Each carved Nimba mask measures over 5 feet tall with a weathered, distressed patina. They are embellished with patinated brass tack nail heads and tinplate. The original dark finish is almost entirely worn off leaving a desirable faded and distressed aged finish. In Baga ceremonies this mask or headdress would be carried and would be wearing a raffia skirt around the bottom. Solid as a pair from an estate in San Francisco, CA. Small measures 21.5"w 24"d 61"h large measures 26"w 31"d 63"h.
