Classic Bronze Lion Statue by Josue Dupon Belgian Sculptor Art Deco
By Josue Dupon
Located in Oakland, CA
Classic decorative bronze by Josue Dupon. Classically trained, his work can be found throughout Belgium. Antwerp Zoo and other major installations. This unique work is from the period of 1896, Dupon was a contemporary of Carlos Bugatti who also was known for this style: realism and interpretations of the modern wild animals. Beautiful signature, stunning rendering and amazing quality. The posture of the male lion is very realistic, extremely life-like casting. This is where you see the connection from the Art Nouveau period and how it later became a very common direction also associated with the Art Deco period.
Josuë Dupon (also Josué or Josue Dupon) was a Flemish sculptor and engraver. He received his education through the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts (1887). After his studies he first worked in the studio of sculptor Clément Carbon in Roeselare. He was good friends with sculptor Jules Lagae. In 1891 he won a gold medal with the monumental sculpture group Samson killing the lion and he became second in the Romeprijs for sculpture. From 1905-1934 he was a teacher of sculpture at the Antwerp Academy.
Dupon was best known as a sculptor of realistic images of exotic animals. The placement of his Camemberter and two bronze groups at the entrance of the Antwerp Zoo confirmed that reputation. He also made busts, war memorials (Ichtegem, Berchem, Hoogstraten, Roeselare) and public monuments, such as the equestrian statue of Constant Lievens in Moorslede (unveiled in 1929). The statue Man...

Russian Silver Troika Sculpture, I. Sazikov after E. Lanceray, Moscow, ca. 1875
By Ignaty Sazikov
Located in New York, NY
The sculpture depicts an elderly peasant, standing to his full height with reins in his hands; behind him in a sleigh are his son and grandson, who drives the horses with a whip. Dressed in typical peasant clothes, all three have very expressive faces.
The entire composition of this outstanding silver sculpture, including the original marble base are executed with such high skill that one could imagine the steam pouring out of the horses’ nostrils in the frosty air; and hear the sound of crisp snow under their hooves. The troika gallops at full speed, leaving behind clear traces of horseshoes on the virgin snow.
Notes:
There are intact little bell on the yoke of a central horse, and an original detachable hallmarked whip. The original, intricately executed marble base is an integral part of the whole composition. The sculpture was never cleaned or polished, and has an original patina.
Markings:
Fully hallmarked with maker's marks IS (for Ignaty Sazikov...

'La Tuffolina', a Marble Group of a Diving Girl by Odoarda Tabacchi, circa 1880
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
'La Tuffolina' - an important white marble group of a diving girl on a naturalistic base, by Odoarda Tabacchi
Italian, circa 1880.
Signed 'O.Tabacchi/Torino'.
This Fine marble group depicts a graceful young girl wearing a knitted bathing dress, her hair held in a chignon with her arms raised above her head in a diving position, standing on the edge of a natural POOL, with the waves lapping behind her.
This charming and dynamic figure, full of natural grace proved to be one of Tabacchi's most popular sculptures and was edited in a number of sizes in both bronze and marble.
First exhibited in marble at the Esposizione d'arte di Napoli del 1877, it was reportedly purchased by King Vittorio Emanuele II and illustrated in L'Illustrazione Italiana, No 23, June 10, 1877, in an engraving based on a sketch by Michetti.
It was subsequently exhibited with great acclaim at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle and examples were also produced in ceramic, including Parian ware examples by the English firm of Robinson & Leadbenton.
A comparative marble version is in the collection of the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples.
