About the Item

Although not as well known as Grueby, Rookwood, Cowan and other potteries that made superb vessels and sculptures in the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco eras, Pewabic pottery in Detroit did equally fine work for many years. The pottery produced sculptures only rarely, however, and this superb example was sculpted by Alexis Lapteff, probably around 1930. Many sculptors in the 1920s and 30s depicted nude female figures holding urns or pouring water from a vessel, but this is one of the most striking we have seen; here the figure is glazed in white with a golden glow to her face and the water she is pouring. Although Lapteff slipped into obscurity later in the 1930s, he made quite a splash as a student at the University of Michigan, designing an Incan theme for the 17th Annual Architects May Party at the University in 1928, winning first prize for an architectural competition from Architecture journal in 1929, and winning a prize for his sculpture of a "Cooing Pigeon" at the annual exhibition of Michigan artists in 1931. The piece is signed on the bottom, and shows a pencil inscription reading "Pewabic."
