About the Item
A powerful patinated bronze sculpture by Argentine artist Ricardo Carpani, titled El Grito, edition 2/7. Measuring 60 × 32 × 22 cm, this expressive work evokes social tension and human emotion through form and gesture.
Ricardo Carpani (1930–1997) was a prominent Argentine painter, muralist, graphic artist and sculptor whose work was deeply tied to social and political themes. Born in Tigre, Buenos Aires, he moved to the city proper in 1936 and later spent time in Paris, where he immersed himself in the artistic milieu of mid-20th century Europe.
Back in Argentina, he became associated with the Movimiento Espartaco (1959–1968), an artistic group that sought a socially engaged visual language rooted in the local environment and the experiences of the working class.
His work often addressed themes of labor, injustice, national identity and the dignity of the marginalized — combining figurative strength with emotional immediacy.
"El Grito" emerges from a climate of artistic activism and political turbulence in Argentina during the mid- to late 20th century. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Argentina underwent cycles of political instability, social unrest, authoritarian regimes and resistance. Artists such as Carpani responded to those conditions by producing works that spoke of collective struggle, protest and human urgency.
In creating El Grito, Carpani channels a universal gesture of anguish or demand — the open mouth, taut musculature, upward tension — into a sculptural language. The work can be read as a cry against injustice, a plea for recognition, or an expression of existential disquiet. It aligns with his broader oeuvre in which the human figure often becomes a symbol of resilience and confrontation.
The use of bronze, with its enduring material weight, reinforces the permanence of the message. The patinated surface gives the sculpture depth and emotional gravitas, as shadows and highlights emphasize contours and tension.
