"A Man From Greenland" Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Figurine is the male figure from a set numbered 12224 (Woman) and 12225 (Man) in the Royal Copenhagen catalog numbering system. The Male figure and the Female figure are sold separately, but sold as a set both the figures are 10 % off. These glazed porcelain figurines were made by Royal Copenhagen, designed by Carl Martin-Hansen, for its "Danish National Costumes" series that it produced between 1906-1925. This series was composed of 47 different depictions of people from the Danish Realm, which at the time included Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland, and in this case depicts natives from Greenland in folk costume.
The pieces are painted with exquisitely rendered detail and warm glowing colors. They are hard paste porcelain standing figurines of a man and woman in traditional garb, in a rich polychrome overglaze decoration. The colors are slightly muted giving a softness to the pieces that has an overall delightful charm.. They are stamped on the lower front "Grønland", Danish for Greenland. The interior bottom is stamped and numbered, a specific means of identification by Royal Copenhagen Porcelain.
Carl Martin-Hansen designed beautiful over-glazed regional figurines from Denmark, the Faeroe Islands and Greenland. Originally he was from Kolding in Jutland, but came to Copenhagen as a very young man, where he became an apprentice by the decoration sculptor H. Charles Petersen and afterwards a pupil at Vermehren’s painter’s school and finally at the Academy of Arts in 1897. Traveling was made possible through scholarships and he studied in both Germany, Italy and France.
He exhibited many places and received a gold medal at the World Fair in Bruxelles in 1910. From 1900 to 1904 he participated in the restoration of the sarcophagus of Queen MargretheI in the Cathedral of Roskilde.
He has created numerous works of art including a bust of Arnold Krog, who revitalized Royal Copenhagen and Danish porcelain art.
Royal Copenhagen Denmark is officially the Royal Porcelain Factory that manufacturers prize-winning porcelain products. Since 1775, every piece of porcelain that has left Royal Copenhagen carries its factory marks; the three waves, the royal crown and the painter's mark. These are symbols of authenticity, the royal connection and the mark of handcraftsmanship. It was found in Copenhagen in 1775 under the protection of Danish Dowager Queen Juliane Marie. The three wavy lines above each other, symbolize Denmark’s three straits: Sorebaelt, Lillebaelt and Oresund.
Radical changes were made in 1883, when the company was bought by Aluminia, an earthenware company. Arnold Krog, an architect under 30 with no practical experience of the industry, was made artistic director the next year, and rapidly shifted designs in the same directions art pottery was exploring, commissioning many painters to design for the factory. Japanese influences were initially very strong. The new wares soon won prizes at various international exhibitions, and most of the large porcelain makers began to move in similar directions, causing problems for the smaller art potteries.
Shortly after Aluminia's acquisition, Royal Copenhagen production was moved to a modern factory building at Aluminia's site in Frederiksberg, on the outskirts of Copenhagen. At the Exposition Universelle (1889) in Paris, Royal Copenhagen won the Grand Prix, giving it international exposure

Royal Copenhagen
Producers of the finest in Danish porcelain, Royal Copenhagen is a company steeped in tradition. Its celebrated blue-and-white china patterns as well as its famed hallmark depicting the royal crown and three waves — symbolizing the monarch who founded the company and the three major waterways of Denmark — are emblems of master craftsmanship.
Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 by Queen Juliane Marie. Years earlier, after the death of her husband, King Frederick V, Juliane’s stepson ascended the throne. Shortly into his reign, he went insane, and the Queen became the head of Denmark and its small empire. She sought to improve Denmark’s economy and founded factories around the country to promote domestic growth and international trade. Royal Copenhagen was one of the first of these. Royal Copenhagen first made dinnerware and vases with blue-and-white motifs inspired by Chinese porcelain, then the rage in aristocratic Europe. Many of these designs are still made today.
Apart from its classic patterns, Royal Copenhagen has adapted to the changing styles of time and appeals to many different tastes. Their prolific body of work includes Rococo-style porcelain statues that incorporate stylistic floral patterns in an Art Nouveau style, as well as modern vases by such noted 20th century Danish ceramists as Axel Salto. Whether used for special occasions or displayed as part of a design collection, Royal Copenhagen pieces represent a legacy of the highest quality.

The monumental "Lynx", the snarling cat, was modeled by Royal Copenhagen artist Knud Kyhn, and created ca. 1950. It’s a monumental piece and remarkably well-preserved with an expressive snarl. The figure is marked by Royal Copenhagen Denmark as shown and numbered 2487. It is in excellent condition with no damage.
Knud Kyhn (1880-1969) was a very productive artist who throughout his life created works of art that are still valued all over the world. In Denmark, he is especially known for his many animal figurines, which he created through his many years of service at Royal Copenhagen. He worked for the Royal Porcelain Factory from 1903 - 1910, 1924 - 1932 and 1936 - 1967, interrupted only by a period of work for Herman A. Kahler in Naestved in the early 1920s and at Bing & Grondahl 1908 - 1915 and 1933 - 1935.
He was a Danish painter, draftsman and ceramic sculptor. He was the nephew of the landscape painter, Vilhelm Kahn, and was educated at the Kunstakademiet and Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in 1904. He worked for the Royal Porcelain Factory, and a period with Herman Kahler in Naestved. He continued the tradition from the Fynbos and focused on animals and their movements as well as on the play of light in paintings...
