Royal Worcester Figurine, "Bather Surprised"

About the Item

This Royal Worcester figurine is made of glazed parian porcelain and entitled "Bather Surprised". Her drapery has been decorated with metallic enamel, giving the effect of shot silk. The only other decoration is a gilded headband and belt. The figure was modelled by Thomas Brock (1847-1922), based on an 1868 model by him entitled "Salmacis". Worcester issued this figure in 1875, and offered it in three sizes. This particular one stands 400 mm (15.75 inches) high, measures 270 mm (10.75 inches) wide and is 175 mm (7 inches) deep. There is some slight loss of gilding to the base and the index finger on her right hand has been repaired. This piece is dated 1912. Thomas Brock started at the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company as an apprentice modeller in the early 1860's, and later enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools where he won a gold medal for sculpting in 1869. He was made a full member of the Royal Academy in 1891, and was knighted in 1911. His numerous large sculptures are found across the UK and in other countries around the world.
