Royal Worcester painted and gilded wall pocket

About the Item

The back of this oval Royal Worcester porcelain wall pocket portrays a prunus tree climbing up a stone wall with the branches and leaves done in blue and the flowers picked out in gold, and the pocket is formed by a representation of a roughly woven piece of cloth protruding from the wall. This shape (shape 662) was first introduced in 1878 and is described in Worcester's shape book as "Boy bracket, 2 boys or 1 boy or no boys", with this one being the latter, having no applied cherubs. This style of item has also been described as a wall bracket, a wall pocket and a hair tidy. The height is 215 mm (8.5 inches), the width 178 mm (7 inches) and the depth 80 mm (3 1/8th inches). It is in very good condition apart from a very small chip to the top edge of the piece of cloth. The back shows the initials of the gilder, thought to be William Chair, the impressed shape number and the back stamp showing the date for 1879.
