Sappho After Jean-Jacques Pradier, Cast by Victor Paillard

About the Item

Bronze sculpture with brown patina featuring Sappho after Jean-Jacques, dit James Pradier (1790-1852). The poet wears a beautiful antique tunic and jewels. Sappho is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung while accompagnied by a lyre, that the poet holds in her left hand. She is leaning against an ionic column signed and dated J. PRADIER 1848 and VP (for Victor Paillard) topped by a crown. Exhibited at the 1848 Salon, the bronze version of this work inspired by the antique art is housed at Osborne House, English royal residence on the Isle of Wight. Sapho was one of Pradier's most popular figures. The Girodet Museum has a bronze edition of this statue. Circa :1850 Dim: W: 8,3 in - D: 6,7in - H: 17,7in. Dim: L:21cm, P:17cm, H:45cm. Victor Paillard (1805-1886) Was one of the most famous bronze casters in Paris during the 19th century. He was taught chasing by Jean-François Denière (1774-1866), and collaborated with Ferdinand Barbedienne. Paillard opened in the 1830’s his own workshop making Art bronzes and Furnishing bronzes, settled at 105, boulevard Beaumarchais in Paris. He first executed small objects, then cast statuettes, candelabra, clocks and torcheres. He exhibited for the first time at the Industrial Products Exhibition of 1839 and worked for the greatest French sculptors, such as Pradier, Barye and Carrier-Belleuse. He exhibited with great success, being mentioned for the quality of his work at the 1851 and 1862 London Universal Exhibitions, and the 1855, 1867 and 1878 Paris Universal Exhibitions. Paillard was awarded many prize medals and the exceptional quality of his works was commented in all jury reports. Bibliography : Musée Girodet Collections.
