Bisque "Cupid Disarmed by a Vestal " After Louis-Simon Boizot
About the Item
Sculpture in bisque porcelain representing "Cupid disarmed by a vestal" after Louis-Simon Boizot. It represents a vestal dressed in a Greek-style drapery and crowned with flowers. She holds Cupid by a leash of flowers. She has taken his quiver which she places on an altar. Cupid represented as a winged putto puts his finger on his mouth. The whole rests on an oval base signed Boizot in hollow at the back and stamped with the mark "VTM Porcelaine de France" of the name of the atelier of Victor, Mauger and Tessier in Villenauxe-la-Grande. It also bears the number 532. There is also an apocryphal mark of Sevres.
It is a production of the early twentieth century.
Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809) is a French sculptor who was in charge of the sculpture atelier of the Manufacture de Sèvres from 1774. He created mostly neoclassical allegorical models that contrasted with the prevailing rocaille taste. However, he was inspired by what had been done before him in the Sèvres factory. Here, he takes the position of "L'Amour Menaçant" by Etienne-Maurice Falconet.
