About the Item

Wooden sculpture of a dancer with brass details, Werkstaette Hagenauer Wien, circa 1950 Today, the Werkstaette Hagenauer is rightfully among the most important Austrian Arts & Crafts manufacturers of the 20th century. The clear, strict formal language combined with dynamic poses and the usage of brass, nickel-plated, patinated or bare, along with copper, alpaca and exotic wood shows a high level of recognition. The theme of the female body, often in an artistic and dynamic pose, is exceedingly present in the oeuvre of both Hagenauer-brothers. From the 1930s onwards, the Werkstaette Hagenauer produced numerous objects with African attributes. In the 1950s, these objects experienced a revival. This beautiful sculpture of a dancer dates to the time around 1950. Expressive dance was an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the designs of the Werkstaette Hagenauer. The convincing balance of an expressive pose, minimalistic and reduced body features typical of Werkstaette Hagenauer, as well as the successful capture of a dynamic moment, illustrates the unmistakable formal language of these important Austrian designers. marked underneath with "HAGENAUER/WIEN", "wHw" in the circle und "MADE IN/AUSTRIA".
