About the Item

Exceptional patinated bronze sculpture depicting King Henry IV of France by sculptor François Joseph Bosio (Monaco 1768–Paris 1845) One of a Kind "Henri IV" patinated bronze sculpture, French, signed by Bosio Unique patinated bronze sculpture depicting King Henri IV of France by sculptor François Joseph Bosio (Monaco 1768–Paris 1845). The sculpture represents King Henri IV as a child, wearing period clothing with a ruff around his neck. He carries the royal sword in his left hand. He advances his step with his right leg and turns his head slightly to the left in an attitude of royal kindness and consideration for his people, whom he loved so much. It stands on a square base, also in patinated bronze, bearing the signature of Bosio, the sculptor, and on one side, the Bronze Foundation. This model follows the one preserved in the Louvre Museum in Paris, made by the same sculptor, but is made of silver and has lost both the scabbard and the saber blade. François Joseph Bosio was the sculptor of Napoleon of the First French Empire and the Restoration. He was a student of Auguste Pajou. Among other works, he created the bas-reliefs of the Vendôme Column in Place Vendòme, Paris, in 1808. On the orders of Vivant Denon, he sculpted the quadriga that crowns the Arc de Triomphe. He was named a Knight of the Order of Saint Michael by King Louis XVIII. Later, he created the equestrian sculpture of King XIV for the Place des Victoires in Paris. He was made a Baron by Charles X in 1825. PARIS BRONZE SOCIETY This foundry was recognized from the last quarter of the 19th century, around 1878, until 1930. Founded at 41 Boulevard du Temple, its manufacturing workshops were located at 117 Boulevard Voltaire. It was used by numerous sculptors.
