"Sea Breeze and High Sierra," Pair of Art Deco Sculptures for Golden Gate Expo

Highly important to the history of California and the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, this pair of Art Deco plaster Marquettes were sculpted by Jacques Schnier in 1938 to model the full-scale sculptures at the fair which opened the following year. The male figure, holding the eagle, represents "High Sierra," and the female figure, holding a large shell, represents "Sea Breeze" and the pair celebrated the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge which were finished in the late 1930s, linking the worlds of ocean and mountain. Schnier was born in Romania in 1898 and came to San Francisco as a child, and later taught art at the University of California, Berkeley. His interest in city planning and architecture led to a series of architectural commissions, including the surviving "Spirit of India" on Treasure Island and a series of bas reliefs for Berkeley High School.
