A Timber Group of Sleeping Silenus and Youth, Probably Dionysus, 17th Century
Provenance:
Acquired from a private collection, Paris c. 1980s.
Description:
Reminiscent of Flemish Baroque representations of Silenus such as those by Rubens, the rustic god is shown passed out from a state of inebriation, adhering to the convention of depicting satyrs in the aftermath of their drunken revelry, his head resting on his left shoulder and his left hand cupping his distended belly whilst the right limply clings to a chalice. Perched up behind the tree stump on which Silenus slumbers is a youth, probably Dionysus, leaning forward with his right hand placed on the satyr’s right shoulder and his left cupping his open mouth as though to amplify his voice, endeavouring to wake his mentor. The whole raised on an arch form socle with leaf cavetto relief.
