About the Item

Young dancer with artfully pinned up hair and insect feelers attached to the headdress, wearing only a short, wide skirt and balancing on one leg with raised arms, the front skirt parts can be folded up at the sides, baring the young woman's body and giving the impression of butterfly wings. The bronze figure is patinated and cold-painted in shades of silver and brown, signature 'R.Thuss' and foundry mark on the top of the round stepped base screwed onto an octagonal black and gold marble plinth. Excellent and detailed quality of the composition, very lifelike representation, as is typical for Viennese bronze art. Design: Richard Thuss (1865 - 1945) born in Nuremberg, studied in Vienna, Munich and Nuremberg. At a late age (after 1930) he lived in Cincinnati/USA until his death in 1945. From 1918 to 1930 Thuss was the chief sculptor at the Bergmann Foundry and executed many of the prized sculptures signed Nam-Greb, Thuss or with 'B' in an urn (those models not designed by Franz Bergmann the Elder). Manufactory: ARGENTOR VIENNA The history of the company dates back to 1863, when C.A. Münchmeyer & Co. was founded. This was the owner of an electroplating factory that was built in 1894 on a narrow, long stretch of land between Kaiserstraße and Wimbergergasse in the 7th district of Vienna. In 1902, the predecessor company C.A. Münchmeyer & Co. became the Argentor-Werke Rust & Hetzel. Over time, the Argentor-Werke became one of the most important metal goods manufacturers of Viennese Art Nouveau. Not only silver cutlery, bowls, centerpieces, tea and coffee services were manufactured, but also home furnishings such as frames, clocks, electric lamps, vases and flower holders.
