An Ivory Shibyama Elephant
About the Item
Shibayama is an art form originating in the town of the same name in Japan. Semi-precious shells or stones in variant colours are inlaid or applied on lacquer and ivory. Many different items can be decorated in the Shibayama style such as vases, boxes, table-screens and swords and even entire ivory tusks. An elephant with a raised trunk is an auspicious Asian symbol of good fortune and hospitality. Intact Shibayama pieces are rare and so are highly valuable and collectible.
