About the Item

Art Deco Carl Kauba Automaton Bronze Nude with Mechanical Cape 1920’s Austria A captivating and rare Art Deco automaton bronze sculpture by Carl Kauba (Austrian, 1865–1922), depicting a confident nude female figure with a mechanical cape mechanism. This finely cast piece epitomises early 20th-century sensuality, theatricality, and mechanical ingenuity. Design & Features Signed “C Kauba” to the base, the sculpture portrays a poised nude woman standing with serene confidence. The bronze features warm golden and rich brown patination, enhancing its sculptural depth. The gold finish on the figure is created through a cold-painted enamel or gold lacquer patination over bronze, a typical technique used by Kauba and the Vienna bronze workshops of the era to achieve a luxurious gilded appearance without solid gold plating. The piece incorporates a clockwork mechanical movement activated by flicking the bow she holds. When triggered, her draped cape automatically unfurls, revealing her nude figure in a theatrical and playful gesture. The cape remains open once released, celebrating both her sensuality and the artistry of the piece. This ingenious automaton mechanism is in full working order, demonstrating the playful yet masterful engineering and design of the period. Why we love it Kauba’s works are renowned for exquisite detail, lifelike presence, and mechanical complexity. This automaton celebrates beauty, sensuality, and humour – a true conversation piece for refined interiors, collectors of Art Deco sculpture, automata, and kinetic art. Its presence combines elegance with mechanical wonder, bringing movement and timeless allure to any collection. Museum Collections & Recognition Carl Kauba’s sculptures are held in several important museum and institutional collections, including: • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which houses his bronze works reflecting European sculpture traditions and his detailed craftsmanship. • The Art Institute of Chicago, featuring works representing his sculptural finesse. • Various European decorative arts museums, highlighting his contribution to turn-of-the-century Austrian bronze sculpture. Kauba is celebrated for his mastery of bronze casting, intricate detailing, and the integration of mechanical and sculptural art forms. Bronze Sculpture Austrian Carl Kauba Rodeo Cowboy Marble, circa 1900
By Carl Kauba
Located in Hamilton, Ontario
Early 20th century bronze on Marble slab sculpture of a bronco rodeo cowboy on horse by Austrian artist Carl Kauba. Weighing a heavy 18 pounds with a solid marble base, Kauba has amazing intricate detail from the reins to the cowboys face and horses hoofs. Carl Kauba (1865-1922) Carl Kauba was born August 13, 1865 in Vienna, Austria. The son of a shoemaker, Kauba chose to follow his calling into the world of art. Collectors now rank him in a class with Remington and Russell as one of the great portrayers of American Western. His subjects were typically Native American Indians, Cavalrymen, Cowboys, and Roughriders. In addition to his American bronzes, Kauba produced a lifetime’s worth of Austrian statuary. His work became fully appreciated on both sides of the Atlantic. Carl studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under professor Laufenberg. Later he would study at the academies under Carl Waschmann and Stefan Schwartz. Next, he went to Paris in 1886 to further study before he set off for the U.S. Kauba’s fascination with the West was fired by the stories of the German writer, Carl May, whose tales of Western adventure were well known throughout Europe. Most authorities feel that he was about twenty-five years old when he traveled widely throughout the American West. He then returned to Austria with voluminous notes, sketches, and several models of Western sculpture...
