About the Item

Hanging sculpture in the style of Alexander Calder, made by AM Authentic Models In good original condition, preserving a beautiful patina, with minor wear consistent with age and use. Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor known as the originator of the mobile, a type of moving sculpture made with delicately balanced or suspended shapes that move in response to touch or air currents. Marcel Duchamp called the Calder’s monumental stationary sculptures "sabiles". He joined the Association of Art Students of New York; in the 1930s, as part of the Abstraction-Creation, he developed a special interest in the field of abstraction, which was manifested first in painting and finally in his work as a sculptor. Joan Miró, Jean Arp and Piet Mondrian would adopt their stylistic proposal to build their own identity. The mobiles are abstract organic figurines suspended on wires that swing with the wind. These pieces elevated Calder in modern sculpture and, in a way, overshadowed the rest of his work composed of drawings, gouaches and sculptures of stone, wood and bronze. He also produced outstanding wire figures, which are like drawings made in space, and notably a miniature circus work that was performed by the artist. The contribution of Alexander Calder was the opposition to the ideology of the sculpture with the harmony, beauty and playful aspect of the mobiles, a proposal that originated an aesthetic revolution. His first big show was at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1943; during that decade, retrospectives of his work were carried out in cities such as Amsterdam or Brazil. In 1952 he won the First Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale, and in 1958 the Prize for Sculpture at Pittsburgh. By 1970 it was already recognized in the world artistic scene; his work was presented at the Guggenheim and again at the MoMA.
