About the Item

17th century Italian gold leaf fragment with calcite crystals in a rock matrix with gold leaf crystal quartz and mounted on a rock coral base. This fragment was originally part of a candlestick from a church in Italy. The calcite crystal in matrix from Elmwood Mine, Tennessee. It is an example of the world's finest crystallized calcite. With the unusual formation of sphalerite and galena, it is unequaled by those from any other part of the world (referenced from the "American Mineral Treasure" book, pg. 337). The fragment artifact has been preserved and transformed by Jean O'Reilly Barlow, the artist and creative director of Interi. The date of manufacture reflects when she transformed the piece and the period shows that the Italian fragment is originally 17th century. Together, the elements create a contemporary, yet historically significant work of organic and old.
