About the Item

18th century Italian fragment decorated with natural forming copper, garnets, and gold mica on an optical calcite base. The Italian fragment originally came from a piece in a church in Tuscany. It is then mounted onto the optical calcite base using the natural-forming copper and garnets, giving the illusion that the sculptural piece is gravity-defying. It is then is embellished with gold mica on the side of the piece that coordinates with the gold-leaf fragment. The matrimony of the minerals and artifact creates a piece that appears to have evolved together over time. Each detail looks as though it had organically grown from the fragment artifact — perfecting the art of illusion and evoking man-made evolution. Interpreting the past to create a piece entirely original.
