About the Item

This is a unique custom surfboard featuring a marquetry deck incorporating 24 carat gold leaf, designed and hand-crafted by the w o o d p o p studio which specialises in marquetry and inlay work. The studio prides itself on constantly challenging the limits of where and how marquetry can be applied and to that end they are the first designers to have ever successfully applied a full-scale marquetry artwork to fully-functioning surfboards. This 9'2 surfboard is a hollow, skin and frame wooden board made out of Paulownia sourced from sustainably managed and certified (FSC / PEFC) forests. It features a marquetry deck with 24 carat gold leaf rails and detailing. The marquetry incorporates a combination of natural and dyed veneers including American Walnut, Ripple Sycamore, Fumed Figured Eucalyptus, Dyed Figured Anegre, Dyed American Tulip and Birds Eye Maple amongst others. The surfboard has been glassed using a bio-resin instead of harmful epoxy resins and features a metal leash-plug and vent with a glassed-on wooden fin thereby avoiding any plastic fittings making it an ecologically sound alternative to your standard foam core surfboard. This surfboard was involved in the Rolls Royce Summer Studio Project where it was driven on the roof of a Rolls Royce Ghost from London to the South of France visiting Cannes and Biarritz; then it was back to the UK and the home of British surfing; Cornwall. Each w o o d p o p surfboard is a single edition artwork whilst also boasting some creditable provenance in the surf-world. They are shaped by one of the UK's legendary shapers of wooden boards ensuring optimum performance in the water, should you want to take it off the Roller and into the water.
