About the Item

A superb raised relief, carved in fine native limestone during a golden era of cultural and artistic flourishing in ancient Egypt. The scene portrays a high-ranking official, elegantly adorned with a broad collar and bag wig, accompanied by his wife, whose hand rests tenderly on his shoulder in an expression of love and partnership. This intricate form of limestone carving, far more labor-intensive than painted plaster, was a mark of privilege and prestige. The refined modelling—drilled nostrils, softly defined jawline, and graceful cosmetic lines—echo the portraiture seen under the reigns of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III, among Egypt’s most celebrated rulers. Originally part of a larger scene of ritual abundance, the couple would have been depicted seated before a table piled high with offerings, sustained eternally in the afterlife. An exceptional example of 18th Dynasty relief sculpture, its style and execution recall the finest traditions of Theban private art at the height of Egyptian artistic achievement. Egyptian Relief of a Man and His Wife Thebes, Early 18th Dynasty, circa 1525 - 1425 BC Limestone with traces of paint. Provenance: 1960s French private collection [based on notarised statement, surface condition, restorations and extant wooden base]. Subsequently art market, Montpellier France. Robert Shaw antiques, acquired from the above on 11th February 2020.

Ancient Egyptian Monumental Temple Sphinxes
Located in London, GB
A pair of monumental limestone sphinxes of Pharaoh Nectanebo I, from the processional avenue of the Serapeum of Memphis, 30th Dynasty, circa 379 - 360 BC. The sphinxes of the Serapeum have captivated travellers since Roman times. However, despite their significance, they are conspicuously absent from the collections of most major museums. Indeed, their existence in private hands is so improbable, and their imitations so numerous, that the present sphinxes were assumed to be modern copies throughout their recent ownership history. Finally recognised and conserved after an extraordinary chance discovery at a garden furniture sale...
