About the Item

An antique terracotta plaque depicting a horse and rider in neoclassical and roman styles by the workshops of 19th century French ceramist, sculptor and architect, Émile Müller. Possibly after a similar design found at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli. Mounted on a bespoke steel stand, this antique plaque makes a beautiful display item for a collector’s cabinet or sideboard, showcasing its distinguished sculpting and golden terracotta colour. Émile Müller Stoneware This antique terracotta plaque is stamped to the back with the Parisian makers mark of the Émile Müller & Co. stoneware factory. Beginning as a manufacturer of roofing tiles, Émile Müller (1823-1889) established the ‘The Grande Tuilerie’ in Ivry, Paris on the banks of the Seine River in 1854. In 1866, the factory diversified, producing enamelled bricks which proved a sensation at the 1889 Universal Exhibition, Émile Müller becoming the centre of Art Nouveau stoneware production in France. Later that year, Émile Müller died and his son Louis (1855-1921) succeeded him as head of the company, renaming it ‘Émile Müller & Co’.
