An Attractive Late 20th Century Armillary Sphere

About the Item

An attractive black iron decorative armillary sphere on a stand with three legs. The sphere consists of nine rings. The copper ball in the middle represents the earth. An armillary sphere is a model of the sky, based on the assumption that the earth rests at the center of the universe. It was an important tool to determine a position or time with the help of the sun. The oldest armillarium was created by the Chinese astronomers Shi Shen and Gan De in the 4thcentury BC and in the West by the Greek mathematician and astronomer Eratosthenes around 225 BC. The Greek Armillary sphere was originally used as a teaching instrument, but during the Era of Discovery in Europe they often took on a decorative function and became a sculptural feature, like this modern example.
