About the Item
Elisabetta Mayo d’Aloisio, L’Eterno Padre, Bronze Bust, Italian, c. 1930s, on Marble Base
Description
A commanding and emotionally charged bronze sculpture by Elisabetta Mayo d’Aloisio (Italian, 1896–1972), titled L’Eterno Padre. This evocative bust captures the wind-swept, godlike visage of the Eternal Father, with deeply furrowed features, a piercing gaze, and an expressive cascade of beard and hair that merges into swirling, flame-like forms.
The bust is cast in bronze with a nuanced dark brown patina and is mounted on a substantial green marble plinth. The modeling displays a bold synthesis of classical anatomical understanding with the psychological expressiveness associated with Symbolism and early 20th-century Italian modernism.
Signed MAYO in the cast and bearing the foundry mark NAPOLI – FOND. LAGANÀ, a respected Neapolitan foundry known for high-quality art bronzes, further supporting the work’s period authenticity and craftsmanship.

Art Historical Context
Elisabetta Mayo d’Aloisio was part of a generation of Italian sculptors working in the interwar and postwar periods, often aligned with spiritual and psychological themes rather than overt political aesthetics. Her work suggests influences from both the Symbolist tradition (as seen in the works of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and Medardo Rosso) and the Futurist embrace of dynamic movement. L’Eterno Padre reveals a visual kinship with early 20th-century Italian sacred art, echoing the mysticism and formal experimentation of sculptors such as Adolfo Wildt and Ernesto Bazzaro.
The use of the Laganà Foundry in Naples situates the work within a circle of artists and craftsmen who collaborated with premier bronze casters in Italy. The foundry’s work is well regarded among collectors of classical and modern Italian bronzes.
