Medieval Architectural Fragment Cornice, Corbel
About the Item
A fragment of a sandstone corbel with flat upper face, moulded transverse ledge and two protruding lobes with reserved trefoil detailing. The lower edge has fine dentiled carving and the rear face has a stepped profile.
The general form and the patine of this fragment are quite attractive but it are in particular the trefoils which are interesting. In Christian symbolism they represent the trinity of God the father, the son and the holy spirit.
Furthermore these spheres were probably also ment as a apprentice piece by a stone cutter. By showing his skills to his tutor he could be granted the title of master stone cutter.
